The author changed the name of his rich friend to “Stephan” and the Swiss village where he had his chalet to “Lindenalp.” But thanks to diligent detective work I discovered the true names of both:
Gustav Hasler (1877-1952): Aged 22, he took over the telephone factory set up by his father Gustav Adolf (1830-1900) and expanded it into an international telecommunications company.
Hasler died in Grindelwald, now a prime tourist destination.
